William Shaffir
William Shaffir completed his graduate studies at
McGill University. In addition to introductory sociology, he has taught courses on ethnic
and racial relations, social interaction, deviance, and qualitative research methods. His
research interests have mainly centred on issues of identity maintenance and
socialization. He has published extensively on boundary maintenance and social
organization in Hasidic communities, the professional socialization of medical students,
processes of becoming religious and falling from faith, and field research methods. His
most recent project examines ex-politicians, notably the social and interpersonal changes
they experience following political defeat. He enjoys playing the yo-yo, swimming,
walking, and folk music.
