Section B: Exploring Concrete Patterns

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about patterning. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Goal

Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (two or three elements) by

• identifying
• extending
• reproducing
• creating

patterns using manipulatives, sounds, and actions. [C, CN, PS, V]

Instructions for Use

Pattern Mania allows students to identify and extend patterns.

To start Pattern Mania, click on the “Pattern Mania” link in the list, and then click on the start button.

To use Pattern Mania, click on the picture that comes next in the pattern.

Click on the “Next” button to see the next sequence.

Colour, Shape, Size allows students to practice sorting objects more than one way, using one attribute at a time.

To start Colour, Shape, Size, click on the “Attribute Blocks” link in the list.

To use Colour, Shape, Size, look at the blocks inside the oval. They are the same colour, shape, or size. Drag the blocks that belong with them into the middle of the oval.

Click on the “Check” button to see if the answer is correct.

Click on the “New Problem” button for a new set of blocks.
