## UNIT 1: PATTERNING

### Section A: Sorting Objects and Recognizing Patterns Around Us

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about patterning. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Goals

Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (two or three elements) by

• identifying
• extending
• reproducing
• creating

patterns using manipulatives, sounds, and actions. [C, CN, PS, V]

Sort 3-D objects using a single attribute. [C, CN, PS, R, V]

Instructions for Use

Sorting and Grouping allows students to sort objects in different ways.

To start Sorting and Grouping, click the “game 9” link on the left.

To use Sorting and Grouping, drag and drop objects anywhere in the garden to make groups.

Click on the “sorted” button when finished.

Click on the “play again” button to sort the objects into different groups.

Colour Patterns allows students to identify and extend patterns.

To start Colour Patterns, click the “Color Patterns” link in the list.

To use Colour Patterns, click on the coloured buttons on the right side to fill in the colours of the pattern.

Click on the “Check Answer” button to check if the pattern has been completed correctly.

Click on the “New Problem” button to get a new pattern.

Check Out Cookie allows students to identify and extend patterns.

To start Check Out Cookie, click on Cookie’s head at the bottom of the screen, and then click on Cookie Monster in the centre of the screen.

Cookie Monster is checking out items at the grocery store. To use Check Out Cookie, complete Cookie Monster's pattern by dragging the correct item into the sequence.

Click on the “Start Over” button to get a new pattern.
