# Planning a Charity Event

## INTRODUCTION

A great deal of data collection and analysis is involved in planning a charity event – who will attend? How many? Do they have special needs or special interests? The specific data required depends on the type of event. Charity events include fundraisers, requests for volunteers, volunteer appreciations, and meetings. Fundraisers might be walkathons, call-in telethons, dinners, sales, auctions, raffles, boat trips, parties, fairs, concerts, or sports events.

Imagine that you are planning a charity event. You will choose the charity, decide on the event, and make decisions about collecting data to be used in planning the event. Your task will be to write survey questions for gathering the data, and then prepare a presentation about your survey.

## THE PROCESS

1. Go to web sites for charities like the ones below. Choose a charity such as one of these or a charity in your community. Decide on a fundraising or volunteer event to plan for the charity.
1. Describe the event that you are going to plan for the charity. Choose something about the event for which you could conduct a survey to collect data. The collected data might be about deciding on the type of fundraiser to plan, a way to engage volunteers, a time or place to host an event, topics to discuss at a meeting, or entertainment for an event.
• Why is the data that you would collect important for making your event a success?
1. Create survey questions to collect the data.
• How do your questions consider issues such as ethics, privacy, cultural sensitivity, and bias? How do the questions avoid influencing the data collected?
• How have your questions been designed to respect the people completing the survey and to respect the charity?
1. Describe how you would select a sample or population for the survey.
• How well does your sample represent the population? Why is this reasonable?
• Why is your method of conducting the survey appropriate?
1. Prepare a presentation that you could give to a committee about your survey. Include answers to questions in steps 2 to 4 that you think would convince the committee that your survey would collect data to contribute to the success of your event.
2. Give your presentation to someone.
