Chapter 4: Percent

Bargain Shopper

INTRODUCTION

Do you consider yourself a bargain shopper? Are you often looking for the best deal when purchasing an item? A store may advertise discounts in a number of ways including:
  Everything discounted 35%
  1/3 off all items
Save $4.00 off the original price

THE TASK

You will be learning about how to work with a percent discount on an item. Once you know the discount, you can calculate the sale price of your purchase. Then you will calculate the final sale price, including PST (if applicable) and GST.

THE PROCESS

  1. Review how to calculate the percent of a number using the website Introduction to Percents.
  2. Practice calculating the percent of a number using the website Practicing Percents.
  3. To show what you know, complete the Percent Practice Worksheet.
  4. Now it's time to shop on your own! Select a music CD from Amazon.com Music CDs and calculate its sale price after a 20% discount. Then calculate the final sale price, including PST (if applicable) and GST. All of your calculations should be recorded on the Music CD Purchase Worksheet. (Use the back of the sheet if necessary.)
