# Exploring Fractions

### INTRODUCTION

Where have you seen fractions? When do we encounter fractions in our lives? What is the purpose of knowing about fractions? If you think through each of these questions, you will realize that fractions are an important part of math that we use in our daily lives. Think about this…how much of the pizza is left? How much more of the book to you have to read? How much flour do I need to bake that cake? We need to know about fractions!

You will explore different websites and learn about how to add and subtract fractions. As you visit each website, feel free to jot down notes. Once you are finished, design a creative poster with a partner that explains the steps of adding and subtracting fractions. Use visuals and appropriate vocabulary. Be prepared to present your poster to the class.

### THE PROCESS

1. Go to Brain Pop to watch a movie about fractions. You will have to create a username and password to get access to this website. To navigate to the movie, select “Math”, then “Numbers and Operations”, then “adding and subtracting fractions.” As you watch the movie, pay careful attention to the process of how to add and subtract fractions. Jot down notes that will help you include data and examples on your poster.
2. View a comic on fractions, by clicking on the “FYI” section under the “adding and subtracting fractions” movie. Why is this comic funny?
3. Finally, complete the review quiz, by clicking on the “Quiz” section under the “adding and subtracting fractions” movie and choosing “Review Quiz.”
4. After you are finished, design a creative poster with your partner that explains to your classmates how to add and subtract fractions. Be sure you use math vocabulary, and all the steps in the process. Include pictures to make it easier to understand.
5. Be ready to share your poster with the class. The class will vote on the best poster, and it will be displayed in the classroom as a resource that everyone can use. So do your best work!
