## CHAPTER 2: FRACTIONS

**Lesson 2: Exploring Adding and Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator **

**Goal**

Describe fraction addition and subtraction models with equations.

**Instructions for Use**

**Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator**

To use Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator, read the description, scroll down to “Practice”, and click on “Start”. A pair of fractions will display at the left of the equals sign as a timer counts elapsed time in the “Report Totals” box below. Enter your answer in the box right of the equals sign. If correct, a new pair of fractions will be displayed. If not, an error box will display the correct answer. Click “Ok” to resume play. You can vary the game by scrolling down to “Play” and clicking on one of the 3 yellow boxes at left.

**Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator**.

To use Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator, follow the same directions given above for Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator.

**Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator **

To use Adding Fractions with Circles, scroll down to read the instructions and then scroll up and click on “Start” to see the first addend. Type the fraction in the “Whole”, “Numerator”, and “Denominator” boxes at upper right and click “OK”. If correct, a second addend is displayed below the first and the fraction for the first addend appears. Type the second fraction in the 3 upper right boxes and click “OK” to see it appear below to the right of the first, followed by an “=” sign. Now type the sum in the 3 upper right boxes and click “OK”. If right, “Sum is correct!” is displayed. Incorrect values at any stage will bring up an error message prompting you to re-enter the correct values. To begin a new game, click on “New Example”. To see the correct way to add the fractions, click on “Explain”. To view your score and print a report card, click on “Report”.
