The Birthday Gift

INTRODUCTION

Algebra is an essential skill that allows you to solve all kinds of problems and make predictions. In this Web Quest you will use algebra to solve an everyday problem. Remember what you have learned so far about equations. This knowledge will help you whiz through any tricky spots!

 

THE TASK

Your friend Andre works as a painter and he is trying hard to save his money so he can buy your favourite video game to give you on your birthday. Andre doesn’t like to do math so he’s asked you to help him figure out how many hours he would need to work in order to make enough money to buy you your favourite game.

 

THE PROCESS

  1. The first thing Andre would need to know is what game you want for your birthday. Go to Amazon.com to see a selection of games and choose which want you want. Be sure you write down the price, rounding to the nearest dollar.  

  2. You know that Andre works 25 hours/week and that he makes $625 dollars/week, but you don’t know how much he makes per hour. Write an equation that will allow you to solve the problem “What is Andre’s rate of pay in dollars/hour?” Then solve the equation.

  3. Now that you know how much the game costs and Andre’s rate of pay (dollars/hour), write an equation that will allow you to solve the problem “How many hours would Andre have to work to make enough money to buy your game?” Then solve the equation and round your answer to the nearest dollar.
