Chapter 3: Decimal Numbers

Family Vacation

INTRODUCTION

You and your family are planning a trip to another country. Your family has a total of $2,500.00 per person for a seven-day trip. Some potential countries of interest are:
• China
• France
• Italy         
• Japan

 

THE TASK

Choose the country that you and your family would like to visit and design a budget to fit your family's needs. Remember you only have $2,500.00 per person. Explore different websites to help you with your research. When you are done, develop a presentation explaining how you made your vacation choice.
Include the following:
• A chart that shows the round-trip ticket price for at least 3 different airline companies. Also show the varying prices for 3 possible dates of departure.
• Show a list of 3 possible places of accommodation for the seven-day trip. Include graphics and explain your choice.
• Create a list of activities and places you plan to visit.
• Create a budget sheet to show how much your family’s trip is going to cost.

 

THE PROCESS

  1. Explore the following websites, and any others you want, to find an appropriate airline. You must investigate at least 3 different airlines and 3 different dates. Make or complete a Flight Chart like the one given. Show which flight you are choosing and why.
  2. Visit the websites below, and any others you want, to find appropriate accommodation for your family. Make or complete an Accommodations Chart like the one given. Show your 3 options, including graphics of each location. For each option, show the cost for one person and the cost for your family for the seven-day trip. Be sure you are using your decimal math skills! Show which accommodations you are choosing and why.   
       
  3. Create a list of the activities your family wants to do while on the trip. You can use the following websites as a starting point. Make or complete an Activity Chart like the one given. Put each activity into the chart, and show the total cost of the activities using your decimal math skills.

  4. Finally, prepare a budget sheet to show that your family can afford to take this trip.

  5. Present your trip to your classmates. Be sure to explain how math helped you to make decisions for the trip and how you know you can afford your trip.
