Chapter 11: Circle Graphs

Free Trip

INTRODUCTION

You have just won a free trip to New York City from McTavish Travel! The catch is that you only have $3 500 to spend for the entire trip. Make the most of your money and plan an amazing adventure!

 

THE TASK

McTavish Travel is providing you with $3 500 to cover flight, accommodation, food, and activities. You know there are many activities you want to do in NYC. So you decide to do some investigating in order to spend as little on flight, accommodation, and food as you can. This way you’ll have as much money as possible for activities such as plays, concerts, museums, ball games, and shopping!

Your task is to present your findings in a circle graph that clearly shows how much you need to spend on flight, accommodation, and food and how much you’ll have leftover for activities. Be sure to list what the activities are that you’re going to do.

 

 

THE PROCESS

  1. Use the links provided to complete a brief background of each destination. Use the Trip Planning Worksheet to write down the information that you research.

  2. Investigate flights using the links below. Keep in mind you want to spend as little as possible.

  3. Now investigate accommodation and food. Look for hotels that include breakfast to save money on meals. You also have to decide how many nights you’ll be staying as that will greatly affect your accommodation costs. Remember you don’t want to spend a lot of money, but you also need enough time to do the activities you have planned.

    Then decide what you think is a reasonable amount to spend on food. You’ll want to go out for a nice dinner at least once. When looking at restaurant listings, look for the “Price” info, or look for a “Menu” section if you go on a website for a specific restaurant.

  4. You should have a good idea at this point about how much money will be available for activities. Using the links below to select some activities you’d like to do. Make sure you add up all the costs to get your total activities cost.

  5. Now you must put your findings into a circle graph. You should have the following categories in your circle graphs: flight, accommodation, food, and activities.
