Instructions for Use

Adding Fractions With Like Denominators lets your child practise adding fractions and mixed numbers having the same denominator using fraction strips.

To use Add Fractions With Like Denominators, scroll down to read the instructions and then scroll up and click on “Start” to see the first addend. Type the fraction in the “Whole”, “Numerator”, and “Denominator” boxes at upper right and click “OK”. If correct, a second addend is displayed below the first and the fraction for the first addend appears. Type the second fraction in the 3 upper right boxes and click “OK” to see it appear below to the right of the first, followed by an “=” sign. Now type the sum in the 3 upper right boxes and click “OK”. If right, “Sum is correct!” is displayed. Incorrect values at any stage will bring up an error message prompting you to re-enter the correct values. To begin a new game, click on “New Example”. To see the correct way to add the fractions, click on “Explain”. To view your score and print a report card, click on “Report”.

To use Add Like Fractions, click on “Start”. A new window displays 3 boxes at top showing fractions to be added and 3 boxes below showing results. Match each addition problem to a result by clicking and holding on the red button at the bottom right of a top box and dragging a line to the blue button at the top right of a bottom box. Correct answers will show as a solid line and wrong ones as a broken line. When wrong answers are corrected, “Nice Work” and a “Next” box are displayed. Click on “Next” to bring up a new set of problems. No score is kept.

Add Unlike Fractions allows your child to add unlike fractions by first changing them into equivalent fractions.

To use Add Unlike Fractions, read the instructions and click on “New Problem”. Type in the common denominator in the box provided, and press “Enter”. If correct, chimes sound and a numerator box displays. Type in the numerator and press “Enter”. If correct, the numerator box for the next fraction displays. Type in the second numerator and press “Enter”. If correct, the sum is displayed and the chimes ring. In the case of wrong answers, a blooper noise signals you to change your values.
