**Lesson 1: Comparing Fractions **

Use these interactive activities to encourage your child to have fun on the Web while learning about fractions. Your child can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

**Goal **

Compare and order fractions using benchmarks and equivalent fractions.

**Instructions for Use**

**Comparing Fractions with the Same Denominators (CFSD)** allows your child to practice comparing fractions having the same denominators.

To use CFSD, read the description, scroll down to “Practice”, and click on “Start”. A pair of fractions will display on either side of the “> More Than”, “= The Same As”, and “< Less Than” answer boxes as a timer counts elapsed time in the “Report Totals” box below. Click on your answer. If correct, a new pair of fractions will be displayed. If not, an error box will display the correct answer. Click “Ok” to resume play. You can vary the game by scrolling down to “Play” and clicking on one of the 3 yellow boxes at left.

**Comparing Fractions with Different Denominators (CPDD) **allows your child to practice comparing fractions having different denominators.

To use CFDD, read the description and then follow the directions given above for CFSD.

**Comparing Unlike Fractions (CUF)** a llows your child to practice comparing unlike fractions.

To use CUF, read the description and then follow the directions given above for CFSD.

**Fraction Darts** allows your child to test and hone their skills in visualizing fractional parts of a whole.

To use Fraction Darts, select the number of darts and difficulty using the blue sliders. Click on “Start”. A new window opens with a balloon between “0” and “1” on a bar at left. Use the top right green sliders to set the numerator and denominator values of the fraction that you think the balloon shows. The fraction will appear in the “Guess” box. See if a dart will pop the balloon by clicking on “Throw Dart”. If not, try a new guess. As an aid, you can click on “Scale” to have a scale appear behind the bar. Click “New Game” to start a new game, or “Setup” to reselect the number of darts and difficulty level.

**Fraction Bars** allows your child to compare fractions to other fractions and find equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents.

To use Fraction Bars open the instructions window by clicking on “instructions to use it” at the bottom of the screen. Click on the back arrow when done to return to the activity.
