Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about patterns in mathematics. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Cross the Swamp lets students find the difference between two 2-digit numbers.

To use Cross the Swamp, read the instructions and click on either of the “SCREEN START” buttons below. Then click on “Addition and subtraction” and “0–100” and read “How to play” on the new screen that opens. Little Ron jumps to a log bearing a number, and 2 other logs in front of that flash. Click on either and note the number that appears on it. Think what number represents the difference between these two numbers and whether you must add or subtract to get to the number on the second log. Click on “+” if the second number is larger and “−” if smaller, and enter the difference on the keypad. If you enter the wrong sign Ron will tell you to correct it. If your answer is right, Ron will get a banana as he jumps to the next log. If not, a crocodile will bite Ron’s tail as he jumps. Click on another flashing log and continue to win Ron bananas until he gets across the swamp. To see a 100s chart, click on a “Help” frog.
