### Lesson 3: Communicating About Prisms

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about 3-D geometry. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Sorting 3D Shapes allows students to identify and name the attributes of common prisms.

To play “Sorting 3D Shapes” click on “open this resource”. It will open another window in your browser. Read the instructions and then click on the “Interactive whiteboard activity” link. Click on the “Activity” tab at the top of the screen to start the activity. Read the instructions and drag the shapes the fit the attribute into the box. Once you have placed all the shapes that fit that attribute into the box, click on “forward” at the bottom of the screen for a new attribute to work with. Click on the “Answer” tab in the top right of the screen to see the answers for all the attributes.

Solid Pattern Pieces allows students to identify and name common attributes of prisms.

To use this activity, read each screen and click on the flashing arrow in the left-hand corner to move to the next screen. There are four screens of instructions. On the fifth screen, look at the prisms and select how many of the different shapes are in each figure. Click through each of the following screens, read the instructions and answer the questions.

Geo Cleo and the Shape Caper allows students to describe and communicate about prisms.

To use “Geo Cleo and the Shape Caper”, click on “Begin Lesson”. Read each screen carefully and click on the “next” arrow at the bottom of the screen when you are ready to move on. Answer the questions Cleo asks by either selecting an option or typing in the white box and clicking “done” to check your answer. Click on any of the highlighted words to see a definition.
