Chapter 2: Numeration

Where Can I Find the Piping Plover?

INTRODUCTION

The piping plover is a small bird that lives near rivers, lakes, and oceans. There are not many piping plovers left in Canada. This means the species is at risk.

THE TASK

Imagine you need to take pictures of the piping plover for a magazine. Find out where you are most likely to see the bird by modelling and comparing the numbers of piping plovers found in different regions of Canada.

THE PROCESS

  1. Visit Hinterland Who's Who to find out how many piping plovers were counted in the Atlantic, Prairie, and Great Lakes regions in 2001. (See the last paragraph of the Breeding section.)
  2. For each region, write the number word to show the piping plovers that were counted (the population).
  3. Write each number as __ hundreds __ tens __ ones.
  4. Use base ten blocks to model each number. Sketch your models.
  5. Compare the numbers using your models. Where would you be most likely to find piping plovers to take pictures of? Where would you be least likely to find piping plovers? How do you know?
