Lesson 5: Using a Place Value Mat


Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about numbers up to 100. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use


Place Values provides students practise with determining the place value of the digits in 2-digit numbers.


To use Place Values, read through the explanation of the place value. Then, scroll down to the Practice section and click Start. A number between 0 and 99 is shown. Select the digit that is in the tens place and the digit that is in the ones place from the lists of numbers from 0 to 9. Click Check. Once you select the correct answer, another number is shown.


A total of the number of correct and incorrect answers will be recorded along with the percentage of correct answers. When you are done, click Report Totals to print out a summary of your session.
Scroll down to the Play section and select one of the three games: Countdown, Give Me Time, or 20 Questions.

Specific Place Values provides students practice with determining the place value of the digits in 2-digit numbers.


To use Specific Place Values, read through the description of the place value. Then, scroll down to the Practice section and click Start. You will be asked what the place value is for either the ones or the tens in the number shown. Select the correct digit from 0 to 9. Once you select the correct answer, another number is presented.


A total of the number of correct and incorrect answers will be recorded along with the percentage of correct answers. Once you are done, click Report Totals to print out a summary of your session.
