Chapter 6: Addition and Subtraction

Lesson 1: Counting On

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about addition and subtraction. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Instructions for Use

Math DoJo allows students to solve simple addition sentences.

You will see a Registration box, click “Maybe Later.” When the game appears, click “Start at Level 1.” You will be shown an addition sentence. Click on the DoJo bag with the correct number to solve the addition sentence. If you are correct, the lizard will kick the bag and another addition sentence will appear. If you are incorrect, the bag will swing back and hit the lizard in the head.

Sum Sense allows students to arrange three or four digits to create an addition sentence.

Click “Start”. You will be shown some numbers and will need to arrange the numbers to create an addition sentence. Click the “Next” button to get a new set of digits to arrange.

Flower Power allows students to solve related addition and subtraction sentences.

Students will be shown a fact family of doubles. Students will complete both the addition sentence and the subtraction sentence. If the student gets the correct answer, they will earn a petal on their flower.
