Chapter 1: Patterning

Lesson 7: Identifying and Describing Mistakes in Patterns

Use these interactive activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about patterning. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

Identify errors in a given repeating pattern.

Instructions for Use

Pattern Game allows students to extend patterns.

To start Pattern Game, click on the “Pattern Game” link.

To use Pattern Game, click on the “start” button.

Click on the object that completes the pattern shown. Also, have students identify which object would make a mistake in the pattern and describe how they know.

Who’s Missing? allows students to identify and create the next element in the pattern. Feedback is given if a mistake is made.

To start Who’s Missing?, click on the “Who’s Missing?” link under Logic, strategy, and then click on the “Who’s Missing? 1” link.

A sequence of 2, 3, or 4 heads is displayed in a repeating pattern. You have to identify the pattern to figure out which head is next in the sequence. Then you have to build a head to fit the pattern.

To use Who’s Missing?, click on the hat, the colour, and the shape you need. Then click on the resulting head. If it's the correct one, it'll replace the question mark. If not, the word “NO” is displayed in red just under the head and you will have to correct the head you built.

Click on the “New game” button to get a new pattern.

Colour Patterns allows students to identify and extend patterns. Feedback is given if a mistake is made.

To start Colour Patterns, click on the “Color Patterns” link in the list.

To use Colour Patterns, click on the coloured buttons on the right side to fill in the colours of the pattern.

Click on the “Check Answer” button to check if the pattern has been completed correctly.

Click on the “New Problem” button to get a new pattern.

Pattern Mania allows students to identify and extend patterns. Feedback is given if a mistake is made.

To start Pattern Mania, click on the “Pattern Mania” link in the list, and then click on the start button.

To use Pattern Mania, click on the picture that comes next in the pattern.

Click on the “Next” button to see the next sequence.
