About the Product

Help your students master Microsoft® Visual Basic with the step-by-step, visual approach and professional programming opportunities in MICROSOFT® VISUAL BASIC® 2015 FOR WINDOWS®, WEB, WINDOWS® STORE, AND DATABASE APPLICATIONS: COMPREHENSIVE. This book’s innovative step-by-step pedagogy integrates demonstrations of professional-quality programs with in-depth discussions of programming concepts and techniques. Students practice and reinforce what they’ve learned with numerous independent programming assignments in each chapter. This new volume retains the popular features and pedagogy from previous editions while emphasizing the changing development process in today’s increasingly mobile-oriented world. This book provides a strong foundation for the number one job in today’s tech sector -- app development -- as students gain a solid understanding of Windows® programming for 2015, including Windows® Desktop, database and web applications, and Windows® Store development. Chapter 12, which covers the Windows® Store, will be posted online at, to provide students with the latest updates for Windows® 10.

  • REALISTIC, UP-TO-DATE APPLICATIONS PROVIDE MEANINGFUL PROGRAMMING PRACTICE -- Each programming chapter focuses on building a sample project that is a complete, useful application showcasing key Visual Basic 2015 features and the latest technology.

  • GUIDED STEPS ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENCE -- After observing how a professional developer would build the chapter project and exploring related programming concepts and Visual Basic 2015 techniques, students create each chapter’s sample application on their own in the Guided Program Development section. This step-by-step section provides enough guidance for students to work independently, with Hint Screens that verify students are performing the tasks correctly.

  • CLEAR DISCUSSIONS OFFER MUCH MORE THAN STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTION -- Each chapter offers distinctive, thorough discussions of the programming concepts students need to understand to build the sample application. Each presentation highlights important Visual Basic 2015 design and programming features, including time-saving techniques such as using IntelliSense, code snippets, and the Toolbox. Whenever appropriate, students design and prepare for applications the way professional developers do -- by creating or analyzing requirements documents, use case definitions, and event planning documents.

  • ONLINE REINFORCEMENT BOXES DIRECT READERS TO ADDITIONAL LEARNING RESOURCES -- The Online Reinforcement boxes send students to the Student Companion site at to watch videos illustrating each step in the chapter project. Students can refer to the chapter’s Online Reinforcement boxes as they initially work through the chapter or as review. Watching these insightful videos helps students prepare to create the chapter application on their own.

  • IN THE REAL WORLD BOXES HIGHLIGHT PROFESSIONAL TIPS, TOOLS, AND TECHNIQUES -- This feature provides valuable insight into how today’s developers use Visual Basic tools or programming techniques to save time or enhance professional development projects.

  • WATCH OUT FOR BOXES PROVIDE CAUTIONS ABOUT COMMON ERRORS -- These helpful features throughout the book explain how to avoid common pitfalls when using a particular command, programming structure, or technique.

  • CONSIDER THIS FEATURES ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENT PROBLEM SOLVING -- This unique feature poses thought-provoking questions and provides answers related to programming and Visual Basic to encourage readers to critically consider options and learn to resolve challenges on their own.

  • NEW CRITICAL THINKING BOXES HELP PROGRAMMERS DEVELOP ESSENTIAL REASONING SKILLS. Critical thinking is an essential part of the programming process. Developers need to be able to reason strategically and justify their decisions to craft an effective program. Critical Thinking boxes in this new 2015 edition encourage students to further explore the ideas in the chapters.
