Overview

About the Product

Focused on and organized around environmental issues, this innovative new book engages students and helps them critically evaluate possible solutions to the environmental problems we now face. The authors outline specific environmental issues and provide the scientific background to enable students to understand each issue. In order to find and apply solutions to these problems, they help students see that the problems are not insurmountable and that something can be done to achieve a sustainable future. The modular chapters provide full descriptions of each of the major environmental problems with real stories about what people are doing to tackle the resulting challenges. Overall, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS offers great flexibility for instructors and provides students with tools for building a sustainable future. Available with InfoTrac® Student Collections http://gocengage.com/infotrac.

Features

  • This is a modular textbook, with 14 of the total 15 modules each devoted entirely to a specific environmental issue. The first module is an introduction to science and sustainability concepts that form a foundation for the course. The fundamental concepts that apply in each module are raised again and applied in practice as they pertain to each individual issue.

  • Frequent reviews of the material include "Let's Review" question lists placed at regular intervals throughout each module. These lists give students a chance to review and reinforce material immediately after they have studied it.

  • Critical thinking activities appear toward the end of each module and allow students to apply the material they have studied. These activities are designed to get students to re-read some part of the module, to think about it, and to apply it in some way to their own daily living.

  • Engaging features illustrate key concepts and provide encouragement. "For Instance" tells a real-world story about how environmental issue has affected a particular area or group of people in the world. "Making a Difference" features a particular individual or group of people who have succeeded in some effort to find more sustainable ways of living or of doing business.

  • Reinforcing important concepts, the "Key Idea" presents a brief summary statement of a major concept that students will take away from their reading of the module. "Consider This" offers a brief statement about some impressive fact or statistic that will stay with students and stimulate their thinking as they read.

  • MindTap for Environmental Science helps students learn and understand key concepts via focused assignments and active learning opportunities that include randomized, automatically graded questions, exceptional text interaction, and immediate feedback.

About the Author

Norman Myers

As an interdisciplinary environmental scientist, Norman Myers has been a pioneer in identifying and looking for solutions to some of the world’s major environmental problems. Myers has carried out research and worked as an environmental consultant in more than 50 countries. He has also served as a visiting professor at more than 20 colleges and universities. Myers’ pioneering research led him to estimate that we were losing one species every day, on average. He helped alert the world to the destruction of tropical forests, explained the economic and ecological reasons for preserving biodiversity, and co-authored a groundbreaking interdisciplinary book describing the state of the planet (published in 1984 and updated in 2005). In addition, Myers originated the idea of preserving biodiversity by identifying and protecting biodiversity hotspots, and he has written of the need for environmental security as a basis for political stability, perverse government subsidies and how they harm the environment, and institutional roadblocks that have blocked many solutions to environmental problems. Myers has written 20 books that have seen sales of more than 1 million copies in 11 language, 300 professional papers in scientific journals, and more that 300 popular articles in newspapers and magazines. He has also served as an adviser to many academic bodies, governments, and international agencies, including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the White House, NASA, the World Bank, the United Nations, and the U.S. Departments of State, Defense and Energy. Myers has received more than 20 major environmental awards and honors, including the Blue Planet Prize, the UNEP Environment Prize, and the Volvo Environment Prize.
