About the Author

Ronald B. Adler

Ron Adler is professor emeritus at Santa Barbara City College, where he developed programs in interpersonal communication, business and professional communication, and communication theories. He has co-authored and edited several textbooks that address communication contexts and topics including interpersonal communication, small group communication, public speaking, assertiveness, and social skills. In addition to writing and teaching, he works with professional and business people to improve their communication on the job.

Judith A. Rolls

Judy Rolls is a professor at Cape Breton University. In addition to teaching Communications to Nursing students, Judy also heads up a Communications Laboratory that examines the far reaching effects of Communications. Judy has authored three successful editions of Looking Out, Looking In as well as Public Speaking Made Easy.

Russell F. Proctor II

Russell F. Proctor II is a professor at Northern Kentucky University, where he has taught since 1991. He primarily teaches courses in interpersonal communication, interviewing, and communication pedagogy. In 1997 he won the university's Outstanding Professor Award. He is the author of numerous articles and textbooks focusing on interpersonal communication and communication education, with a particular interest in the use of feature films as instructional resources.

New to this edition

  • In Chapter 1, the term “mediated communication” has been replaced with “social media,” which better reflects today’s usage. Further, this section has been updated and expanded to include a section entitled Competence in Social Media that addresses issues regarding safe media practices.
  • In Chapter 2, a discussion on gender, self-concept, and transgendered individuals was added.
  • In Chapter 3, a new opening was added for Gender Roles that better reflects how gender is interpreted by the transgender community.
  • In Chapter 4, a new segment on physiology and emotional memory as a source of debilitative emotions was added, as were additional examples of how debilitative emotions involve communications.
  • In Chapter 5, the author added information in the Language and Sensitivity section regarding sexual orientation and transgender individuals. There are also more explanations given to the examples used in the “I” language section, and the section was reorganized so that the concept is clearer in general.
  • In Chapter 7, there is new research on the negative effect of cell phone use on interpersonal communications.
  • In Chapter 8, there is new research on the role that social media plays in relational commitment, new research on intimacy and social media, along with a discussion of the perils of sexting.
  • In Chapter 9, there are new sections on mental illness and communication climate in the workplace. There is also research on aggressiveness and cyberbullying.
  • In Chapter 10, new research has been added to the Gender section.
