About the Product

CLEFT PALATE & CRANIOFACIAL ANOMALIES: EFFECTS ON SPEECH AND RESONANCE 3E is the only book of its kind to cover both oral and facial anomalies, as well as cleft palate. Designed as a how-to guide for the practicing clinician, this book emphasizes what students need to know in the workplace to evaluate and treat individuals with speech disorders related to structural anomalies. Common craniofacial anomalies, associated anomalies, and genetic syndromes are also included. There is basic information on anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the face and oral cavity. The book covers how oral, dental, and ENT anomalies affect speech, resonance, and feeding. The evaluation section includes practical information on how to conduct a perceptual evaluation of speech and resonance and an intraoral examination. An overview chapter on instrumental procedures is provided for students, and chapters on how to perform and interpret these procedures is provided for clinicians. The treatment section includes surgical procedures and the use of prosthetic devices. Specific speech-therapy techniques are described for the treatment of speech errors associated with resonance disorders and velopharyngeal dysfunction. The need for multidisciplinary team assessment and treatment is also stressed. This book is easy to read to maximize learning. Many quality illustrative videos and video case studies are used to provide practical knowledge on how to evaluate and treat affected individuals.

  • Includes comprehensive and easy-to-understand chapters that cover a wide range of interdisciplinary topics related to cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies.

  • Contains close to 400 photos and illustrations showing various clefts and craniofacial anomalies, as well as illustrations of evaluation and treatment of these disorders.

  • Includes case studies that illustrate how information applies to real-life situations.

  • Includes term definitions and an extensive glossary, and concepts that enable learning and review.

  • Contains reference material that can be distributed to patient, parents, and guardians.

New to this edition

  • New Chapter: There is a new overview chapter of instrumentation entitled Instrumental Procedures. This gives the instructor the option to assign this chapter to students, rather than assigning the more detailed chapters on each type of instrument.
  • Speech Notes: Chapters regarding anomalies and surgeries have boxed sections called Speech Notes. These sections highlight how these anomalies or surgeries affect speech and resonance.
  • Cleft Notes: A Cleft Notes feature is online for each chapter. Cleft Notes are summary tables that can be completed by students when reading the text. The Cleft Notes are specifically designed to promote active learning. The completed Cleft Notes can then be used by the students as a study guide. (Instructors have access to completed Cleft Notes for each chapter.)
  • Videos: More than 240 patient videos are online for case-based learning, and more will be added over time. These videos Illustrate different speech and resonance disorders, evaluation techniques, and treatment techniques. There are also many videos of nasopharyngoscopy, videofluoroscopy, and even nasometry studies.
