Some problems can be solved using software packages, but many exercises are for paper and pencil solution. MATLAB based examples and problems are also included for users comfortable with computer programming.

There are some derivations of concepts that are necessarily academic (e.g. signal to noise ratio) but the concepts are couched in such a manner as to not turn off the students with "dryness". The more academic sections are well distributed between practical concepts and not collected into a few dry introductory material chapters like in most textbooks."
