About the Author

Spencer Rathus

Spencer Rathus obtained his Ph.D. from the University at Albany and has wide experience in hospital and other health settings. He is currently on the faculty at New York University. He has published some 30 research articles, focusing on the areas of human sexuality, substance abuse, and assertive behavior. He developed the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule and has written college textbooks in such areas as human sexuality, child and adolescent development, college success, and HIV/AIDS. He has also served on educational task forces aimed at diversity Issues at both the precollege and undergraduate levels

Shauna Longmuir

Shauna Longmuir has instructed at the elementary, high school, college and university levels since beginning her teaching career in 1989. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, a Bachelor of Education in Social Sciences from the University of British Columbia and a Masters of Education in Educational Psychology from Dalhousie University. Publishing teaching and learning resources for human growth and development text books has provided the opportunity for her to remain current in her field of study while helping students learn and assisting teachers to teach. Shauna has developed human growth and development test banks, instructor manuals and learning websites. Revising HDEV into a Canadian edition provided an opportunity to merge her interests in political science and psychology. The study of human growth and development explores theories associated with the lifespan while reflecting on shared stories and experiences. Shauna hopes that students and instructors will enjoy this journey as much as she does.

Laura Ellen Berk

Dr. Laura Berk is a full-time professor in Community Studies at Seneca College. She also works as a clinical psychologist in private practice in the Durham Region. She received her M.S.W. at the University of Toronto and her M.A. and Ph.D. at York University. Dr. Berk teaches human development and interpersonal communication to first-year students. She is passionate about topics related to bullying and peer rejection, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, parenting and issues related to infertility.

Rebecca Rogerson

Rebecca Rogerson has worked as an international development consultant and social justice advocate for almost twenty years. Her focus on Southern Africa, HIV and AIDS, and Indigenous Peoples’ rights, has led her to develop and implement award-winning community-based, national level and education-based curricula and programs. She is currently pursuing her graduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at York University while teaching in the Social Service Worker Program at Seneca College. She is passionate about providing culturally appropriate counselling to marginalized communities, and dabbles in creative writing as a vehicle for social change. She has three children and lives in Ontario.
