Overview

About the Product

Charles Hoffer's best-selling MUSIC LISTENING TODAY is a complete course solution that develops users' listening skills while teaching them to appreciate the different styles, forms, and genres of music. It forms the basis for WESTERN MUSIC LISTENING TODAY, Fourth Edition, which focuses only on Western music, omitting chapters on popular and world musics. This affordable, brief, chronological survey text features two CDs--automatically included with new copies of the book at no additional cost--that contain the text's core music selections. WESTERN MUSIC LISTENING TODAY, Fourth Edition, provides dozens of familiar and less familiar selections, all carefully chosen for their ability to get users interested in listening to all kinds of music.

Features

  • Every copy of this text includes two free audio CDs. These include a complete core listening program of thirty-two selections that covers the entire text.

  • Thirty-five concise chapters give instructors flexibility in course management and can be read in one sitting.

  • Short composer biographies and informational boxes offer cultural and social background that enriches the musical selections.

  • Part-opening timelines, richly illustrated with period art, enable students to place the chronology of music within its cultural and historical context.

  • Listening Guide headings provide date of work, as well as reminders about such elements as genre, form, medium, and tempo. Listening Guide timings are easy to follow, with track numbers and track-by-track times (as on CD players) immediately adjacent to commentary. And Listening Guide descriptions have been made even easier for students with no musical training.
