Overview

About the Product

COMMUNITY NUTRITION IN ACTION introduces the program planning, policies, resources, and nutrition issues specific to community nutrition and provides an understanding of creating and implementing nutrition programs from various constituencies (elderly populations, children, impoverished populations, college students, etc.). Successful practitioners in community nutrition have proven to have a mind and skill set that opens them up to new ideas and ventures. Incorporating an entrepreneurial approach, this book helps readers learn how to take risks, try new technologies, and use fresh approaches to improving the public’s nutrition and health status. The book also delivers the core material important to those who will be active in solving community nutritional and health problems, including program delivery, nutrition education, nutrition assessment, and planning nutrition interventions.

Features

  • "Case Study" sections are included at the end of each chapter. Each includes a scenario and identifiable learning outcomes. Students are asked to complete a series of steps to reinforce this feature as a useful learning tool.

  • “Entrepreneur in Action” features focus on professionals actively engaged in community nutrition. Each story is highlighted in brief in the text with instructions on how students can access the full articles online at www.cengagebrain.com.

New to this edition

  • The material on community needs assessment is now presented in one chapter (Chapter 4) so that this important topic is as clear and concise as possible. Chapter 4 gives a step-by-step analysis of the community needs assessment process and describes the types and sources of data collected about the community, as well as the reasons that people eat what they eat and the questions asked in obtaining information about target populations, including diet assessment methods. A new case study—“Planning a Needs Assessment Focused on School Children”—helps guide students through a sample needs assessment scenario.
  • The new “Think Like a Community Nutritionist” feature provides questions and activities to help students think analytically and critically about the chapter topics, giving them the opportunity to step into the role of community nutritionist to further explore scenarios that they may encounter in the field.
  • New Appendix D provides sample community needs assessment assignments, including one completed by students at California State University Long Beach (CSULB).
