Overview

About the Product

The brief sixth edition of THE CALL TO WRITE continues and expandes its creative approach to college composition. Organized by genres, including letters, memoirs, profiles, reports, commentaries, proposals, and reviews, and including new chapters on the essay and on multigenre writing, this innovative rhetoric gives students the practice they need to write in college and in the public sphere. Timely, provocative readings promote social engagement, encouraging students to become involved, through public writing, in their community and in the greater world around them.

Features

  • The organization and design of the book have been simplified and streamlined to enhance readability. Chapter titles have been shortened, clarifying the subject matter and making the text easier to navigate.

  • Revised Chapter 1, "What Is Writing Today? Analyzing Literacy Events and Practices," examines writing in the digital age, deepening an emphasis on writing and literacy as multimodal and digital.

  • Revised Chapter 3, "Persuasion and Responsibility: Writing a Position Paper," considers what makes writing persuasive and how to construct a responsible argument.

  • Revised Chapter 4, "The Rhetorical Work of the Essay: How Form Embodies Purpose," demonstrates the options in essay writing and offers guidance in shaping, designing, and writing essays.

  • A diverse range of public writing models, including speeches, news stories, websites, blog postings, op-ed pieces, graphic novels, graffiti, listservs, and newsletters, is represented throughout the book.

  • Part II offers highly structured, core chapters on writing in different genres: letters, memoirs, profiles, reports, commentaries, proposals, and reviews. A new chapter (12) on multigenre writing offers guidance on public writing: for publicity, social movements, and advocacy campaigns. All readings and visuals in the genre chapters have been updated.

  • "For Critical Inquiry" questions in Part II ask students to read closely and carefully, to understand their response as readers and the decisions writers make when they take up the call to write.

  • Student-written pieces, literary and popular essays, and writing from various collegiate disciplines and professions also are included as models for writing.

Reviews

:"I like just about everything in this text and its cutting-edge approach to rhetoric and composition. It accepts that electronic genres are important in writing, that collaborative writing is a useful pedagogical tool, and that students must be given challenging individual and group assignments to practice the skills outlined in each section."
— Marie Fitzwilliam, University of Missouri - Columbia

New to this edition

  • The brief sixth edition emphasizes multigenre writing throughout the text, making the point, in new exercises and readings, that in the 21st century all texts are multimodal. A new Chapter 12, "Multigenre Writing: Publicity, Advocacy Campaigns, and Social Movements," offers guidance on public writing. A thoroughly revised Chapter 17, "Visual Design," offers instruction in the changing proportions of visual design in the multimodal age.
  • Each chapter in Part II includes new exercises on Multimodal Composition. While making the point that all texts are multimodal, THE CALL TO WRITE helps students understand how composition changes depending on whether it is produced as a paper, a video, a blog post, or in some other genre.
  • A completely revised chapter on essay writing has been added to Part I. In examining the open and flexible approach to writing made possible by this genre, Chapter 4, "The Rhetorical Work of the Essay: How Form Embodies Purpose," demonstrates the options in essay writing and teaches students how to shape, design, and write essays.
  • Readings and visuals are current and up-to-date.
