About the Product

The best-selling CHILD, FAMILY, SCHOOL, COMMUNITY: SOCIALIZATION AND SUPPORT, now in its Ninth Edition, offers an excellent introduction to socialization that is grounded in a powerful conceptual framework--Urie Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Model of Human Development. Examining how the school, family, and community influence children's socialization, this text addresses complex issues in a clear, comprehensive fashion. Students enjoy reading the book and appreciate its narrative drive, meaningful and timely examples, and effective pedagogy. A sensitive presentation of diversity issues includes matters related to culture, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and special needs. Updated throughout, this edition features a stronger emphasis on NAEYC and DAP standards as well as new information on diversity in all forms, technology and the impact of media, bullying, and other topics. A complete supplements package, including videos that depict actual classroom settings, supports instructors and students.

Features

  • The most comprehensive, original, and researched-based text in the child socialization market, this book offers thorough coverage that examines all influences on children's socialization, including parenting, family, school, community, the media, peer groups, teachers, and non-parental child care.

  • This popular, proven text uses Urie Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Model of Human Development as a framework to illustrate and examine how school, family, peers, and community influence children's socialization. The model is introduced in Chapter 1 and integrated throughout subsequent chapters.

  • Excellent graphics include the Bronfenbrenner concentric circle model highlighted according to relevant chapter topics.

  • Featured in every chapter, Socialization Sketches spotlight popular icons who have socialization histories relevant to the chapter focus and topics. The author examines the socialization histories of John F. Kennedy, Yo-Yo Ma, Oprah Winfrey, Carlos Santana, and others. These popular features engage readers with stories of real people.

  • Chapter 9, "Ecology of the Mass Media," offers an accurate and timely reflection of ongoing technology as it relates to children and socialization.

Reviews

"[The text] is a great combination of providing an overview of families, different types of schools, and how to get involved in the community. It allows my students to show the effects of how families, schools and communities can work together for the better of the child."
— Rachel Bernal, San Jacinto College
