About the Author

Stewart Venit

Stewart Venit received a PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. For the past 24 years, he has taught mathematics at California State University in Los Angeles. Professor Venit is a past department Chair and recipient of the University’s Outstanding Professor Award. He has authored numerous journal articles and ten textbooks for mathematics or computer science.

Wayne Bishop

Wayne Bishop received a PhD in mathematics from Western Michigan University in 1971 after which he began teaching at California State University in Los Angeles. He is a past Chair of the Department of Mathematics and spent one year teaching in Mexico City as a Fulbright Professor. Professor Bishop is very active in continuing efforts to improve mathematics education in California.

Jason Brown

Jason I. Brown received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1987 and is currently a professor of Mathematics at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has written over 60 refereed research papers in combinatorics and its connections to other branches of mathematics. He employed mathematical research to uncover how The Beatles played the opening chord of A Hard Day's Night in 2004 and garnered widespread media attention, appearing on CBC radio's As It Happens, The Discovery Channel's Daily Planet show, and his work has been featured on the front page of the National Post, in Guitar Player magazine and on the web site of the Wall Street Journal. Professor Brown is an avid guitar player and songwriter, and he recently released his first CD, "Songs in the Key of Pi".
