Overview

About the Product

Created through a "student-tested, faculty-approved" review process, ASTRO is engaging, accessible and the first Canadian textbook developed for the introductory astronomy market. Created specifically with Canadian learners in mind, this resource accommodates the diverse learning styles of today's students at a value-based price. The mission of ASTRO is to tell the story of astronomy from a global perspective within a uniquely Canadian context. Canadian astronomers and discoveries that have shaped the field are highlighted throughout, making the subject matter more relevant and interesting to Canadian students. Adapted by three of Canada’s leading educators, ASTRO employs the same engaging writing style and logical conceptual presentation that has become a hallmark of authors Mike Seeds and Dana Backman’s introductory astronomy texts. Shohini Ghose, Vesna Milosevic-Zdjelar, and L. Arthur Read bring a wealth of experience to the Canadian edition. Get online! Accompanying ASTRO is a full supplement package, including free access to premium website CourseMate and NETA (Nelson Education Teaching Advantage) Enriched Instructor's Manual, available online or on the Instructor’s Resource CD (IRCD). Also included on the IRCD are PowerPoint® presentations, a complete Image Library (jpegs of the beautiful and exciting photographs and figures used in the textbook), and a NETA Test Bank that employs the easy-to-use and versatile ExamView® format. With these lecture planning aids, ASTRO is as accommodating to instructors as it is to students.

Features

  • An innovative combination of content delivery both in print and online provides a core text and a wealth of comprehensive multimedia teaching and learning assets, all based on input from student focus groups and surveys, and from interviews with faculty and students.

  • Students will be engaged by ASTRO’s attention to the role Canada has played in global efforts in astronomical research and exploration, including innovations such as the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, the Canadarm, and the MOST telescope. At the same time, the importance of international co-operation is stressed—for example, in discussions of Canadian contributions to international space missions and the development of VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) telescopes.

  • Profiles of famous Canadian astronomers appear throughout the text, including Jim Peebles, Wendy Freedman, Ray Jayawardhana, and Jaymie Matthews.

  • Special focus is given to the global story of astronomy. Using multicultural and interdisciplinary examples, treatment of this topic ranges from descriptions of Inuit, Mesopotamian, Indian, and other non-Western traditions in ancient astronomy to discussions of current developments like the exciting discoveries from the CERN Large Hadron Collidor and international efforts by Chinese, Japanese, and other scientists to discover Near-Earth Objects.

  • Shorter, comprehensive chapters in a modern design present content in a more engaging and accessible format without minimizing coverage for your course

  • Chapter In Review Cards at the back of the book provide students with a portable study tool containing all of the pertinent information for class preparation.

  • Mike Seeds's conversational and student-friendly writing style, which has made him the best-selling author in introductory astronomy, pervades the Canadian edition. Students and professors find great clarity and accessibility in Seeds’ presentation of astronomy and our authors have seamlessly modelled their writing on his. The approachable style ensues that students are able to acquire an understanding of the universe instead of memorizing a set of facts that would quickly be forgotten.

  • ASTRO offers all of the content and resources you expect with a supplements package that is second to none, including NETA Test Bank, Enriched Instructor’s Manual, PowerPoint Lecture Outlines, Engagement Tracker, and an Image Library of photographs and figures from the text in jpeg format. The CourseMate online homework system and the innovative YouBook through Enhanced WebAssign allow full instructor customization and robust class communication tools, including videos, animations, interactive flashcards, online glossary, stimulating games to motivate student review, and additional essays only available online.

  • CourseMate provides instructors with all of the reporting tools needed to track student engagement, while students can access an interactive ebook and study tools in a dynamic, online learning environment. CourseMate comes automatically with this textbook.
