Essentials of Managing Human Resources Fifth Canadian Edition is written for students who will become (or are) supervisors and line managers and HR professionals. About the Author

Eileen B. Stewart

Eileen Stewart teaches part-time at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where she was program head, Human Resource Management Programs, for a number of years. She is a senior human resources professional with extensive experience in all areas of human resources management, including labour relations in both the public and private sectors. As the HR executive, she has managed human resources units in several of British Columbia’s large public-sector organizations. With a diverse background that includes mining, banking, education, and municipal government, Ms. Stewart has a strong overall business orientation. After receiving a B.A. in economics and commerce from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, she joined Teck Mining as its first personnel manager. She then moved to BCIT, where she specialized in labour relations. She obtained her senior management experience at BCIT, as director of personnel and labour relations; the University of British Columbia, as director of human resources; and the City of Vancouver, as general manager of human resources. While working full-time, Ms. Stewart completed her M.B.A. at Simon Fraser University. She currently teaches HRM courses at BCIT and continues to provide consulting services to private, public, and not-for-profit organizations. Ms. Stewart is active in the HR community through her continued involvement with the Human Resources Management Association. She was recognized by HRMA in 2012 with the Award of Excellence for the HR Professional of the Year and became an Honorary Life Member in 2015. She has also served as president of the HRMA, as well as in other executive roles, for several years. In addition to her professional involvement, she is Vice-Chair, Board of Directors, B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre Foundation, and is on the Board of Directors, Community Living BC. Previously, she was chair of the Board of Directors, YWCA of Vancouver, and sat on its Board for many years.

Monica Belcourt

Monica Belcourt is the Director of the School of Human Resources Management at York University. She is the Past President of the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO), past Director of the School of Administrative Studies and the founding Director of the Graduate Program in Human Resources Management at York University. Her research is grounded in the experience she gained as Director of Personnel for CP Rail, Director of Employee Development, National Film Board, and as a functional HR specialist for the federal government. Dr. Belcourt alternated work with graduate school, earning a MA in Psychology, a M. Ed in adult education, and a PhD in business. She also holds the designation CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional). She has taught HR at McGill, Concordia, Universite du Quebec a Montreal and York, and given seminars for HR professionals and executives. She created Canada’s first degrees in human resources management: B.HRM (honours) and a Masters in HRM (www.atkinson.yorku.ca/mhrm/). Monica is the Series Editor for the Nelson Canada Series in HRM, lead author of Strategic Human Resources Planning, and is the lead author of the best selling book, Managing Human Resources, published by Nelson (www.belcourt.nelson.com). She is a frequent commentator on HRM issues for CTV, Canada AM, CBC, The Report on Business, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian HR Reporter and other media.

Catherine Fitzgerald

Catherine Fitzgerald is a professor in the management and human resource management (HRM) options with the Okanagan School of Business, at Okanagan College, with more than 25 years of combined teaching experience with Western Canadian universities and colleges. Ms. Fitzgerald has played a leadership role in the development, delivery, and evaluation of 13 human resources management classroom and online courses with the resource support and knowledge-sharing of Okanagan College colleagues and industry partners. Since 1987, Ms. Fitzgerald has managed a successful HR practice. She has assisted both private- and public-sector organizations deal with resource allocation and service delivery changes resulting in workforce adjustments. Ms. Fitzgerald has completed certificates in leadership, human resources management, information technology, organizational learning and development, career development, conflict management, and negotiation. She has a master of arts degree from the School of Management, J.F.K. University. She also holds the designation of Certified Human Resource Professional and Certified Canadian Counsellor and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Management at the Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University. Ms. Fitzgerald has authored instructors’ and students’ learning support materials for the Nelson textbook series in HRM. She has reviewed both textbooks and journal articles for Canadian and international publishers as well as presented HRM papers at national and international conferences. Ms. Fitzgerald has been recognized by WorkSafe BC for her contribution to the safety of young workers and by BC HRMA for her leadership and excellence in HRM.

George Bohlander

George Bohlander is Professor of Management at Arizona State University. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. His areas of expertise include employment law, training and development, work teams, public policy, and labour relations. He has received the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award presented by the College of Business at ASU and also received the prestigious ASU Parents Association Professorship for his contributions to students and teaching. Dr. Bohlander is an active researcher and author. He has published over 50 articles and monographs in professional and practitioner journals such as National Productivity Review, HR Magazine, Labor Law Journal, The Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector, and others. Dr. Bohlander continues to be a consultant to public and private organizations including the U.S. Postal Service, American Productivity & Quality Center, BFGoodrich, McDonnell Douglas, Rural/Metro Corporation, and Del Webb. He is also an active labour arbitrator.

Scott Snell

Scott A. Snell is the E. Thayer Bigelow Professor of Business Administration at Darden School of Business, where he teaches courses in Leadership and Strategic Management. Prior to joining the Darden faculty in 2007, Scott was professor and director of executive education at Cornell University's Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies, and a professor of management in the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University. Scott's research focuses on strategic human resource management. He was recently listed among the top 150 most-cited scholars in the field of management. He has worked with a number of Fortune 500 companies in the United States and Europe to align investments in talent and strategic capability. Scott is co-author of four books: Managing Human Resources, Management: Leading and Collaborating in a Competitive World, M: Management and Managing People and Knowledge in Professional Service Firms. Scott has served on the boards of: the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, the Academy of Management's Human Resource Division, the Human Resource Management Journal, the Academy of Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Review.
