About the Product

Partnerships was developed as a resource for students, faculty, and teachers to encourage the development of meaningful and respectful relationships with families. Over the past few years, a significant shift has taken place in the relationship between families and teachers in both early learning and school environments. Many family members have demanded a more active role in their children’s care and education and have challenged the notion of “teacher-as-expert.” Compelling research supports the benefits to children, educators, teachers, and families when a strong alliance among all parties is formed, and it is from this perspective that the text has been written. The fifth edition of Partnerships differs in several ways from the previous versions. As more children throughout the country enter full-day kindergarten programs, the text has been expanded to be more inclusive of primary school environments. Students have played a greater role in this edition by providing their insights into their experiences while in their field placements. Many experts from around the country have also shared their ideas, as well as examples of programs that have been successful in their own communities. About the Author

Lynn Wilson

Lynn Wilson was a well-respected faculty member at George Brown College. She has also previously taught in primary classrooms, including in a full-day kindergarten program in a child-care environment. She has visited childcare centres throughout western Canada as a director of a Child Care Initiatives Fund project for Health and Welfare Canada on extended-hour childcare. In cooperation with Ryerson University’s School of Early Childhood Education, she delivered training workshops with colleagues to front-line teachers in Bosnia during the summers of 1999 and 2000. Wilson was the Technical advisor on a five-year partnership project in Early Childhood Education in Jamaica with the Association of Community Colleges—her work there continues with additional funding received in 2008. In 2006, Wilson won a National Teaching Excellence Award from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.
