About the Author

Joseph A. Grafft

Joseph A. Grafft is currently a Community Faculty member at Metropolitan State University, School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, a position he has held since 1995. He also coordinates the instruction for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), various industrial locations and is licensed by the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board to deliver EMT-Recertification, EMR Initial and refresher training. Mr. Grafft began his EMS career in 1965 working in an ambulance while going to college. Mr. Grafft left teaching in the high school in 1988 and became the EMS Director at a hospital Paramedic system. In 1990 he became the first EMS Manager for the Minnesota State Board of Vocational Education – Fire Center, which later became the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities – Fire/EMS/Safety Center – Chancellors Office. He retired from this position in 2005. Joseph A. Grafft is the Past-President of the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE), International Rescue and Emergency Care Association, and Minnesota Ambulance Association; Past Chair of the AHA-ECC Committee in Minnesota; author of the Issues in Spinal Care Course; Secretary of Advocates of EMS; Current Treasurer of the National Association of EMS Educators, and conference presenter. He has taught the San Diego Border Patrol in Basic and Advanced Wilderness Medicine and is a Nationally Certified Instructor for NAEMSE.

Katherine Kuzma Grafft

Katherine Kuzma Grafft has been a health professional for thirty eight years. As a Registered Nurse she has had extensive experience working in a Level One Trauma center and has been certified as a CCRN, (critical care RN). Certifications include: EMR Instructor, BLS Instructor, ACLS, PALS, OCN (oncology nurse certification) She is BLS Training Center Faculty and has been a NREMT. Presently she is RN faculty at North Hennepin Community College and an EMS Instructor providing training for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and Customized Safety Training.
