Overview

About the Product

The sixth Canadian edition of Abnormal Psychology continues its groundbreaking integrative approach to delivering the most modern, scientifically valid method for studying abnormal psychology through its balance of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors. The author team blends sophisticated research and an accessible writing style with the most widely recognized method of discussing psychopathology. Going beyond simply describing different schools of thought on psychological disorders, the authors explore the interactions of the various forces that contribute to psychopathology. Revised to be lighter and easier to comprehend, the conversational writing style and consistent pedagogical elements of this text—as well as integrated case studies (95 percent from the authors' own files) and additional study tools—make this the most comprehensive resource on Abnormal Psychology available.

Features

  • Unlike texts that take a linear single-cause, single-treatment approach, Barlow et al. integrate the contributions of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors into descriptions of the etiology and treatment of psychopathology. Frequently, a single case is carried throughout the discussion of each disorder, including coverage of treatment issues and outcomes.

  • This text features substantial, cutting-edge coverage of prevention. The authors discuss a variety of topics that will pique students' interest—for example, how to prevent eating disorders, sleep disorders, substance abuse and dependence, suicide, antisocial disorders in children, and more.

  • Student Learning Outcomes, placed at the start of each chapter, assist instructors in accurately assessing and mapping questions throughout the chapter. The outcomes are mapped to the core APA goals and are integrated throughout the instructor resources and testing program.

  • The “Innovative Approaches” boxes discuss forward-thinking treatments such as dialectical behaviour therapy, the use of “vice vaccines” to manage addiction, and the development of designer drugs for attention deficit disorder and other conditions, based on a person’s genetic profile.

  • The “From the Inside” feature appears in chapters on specific disorders and is a compassionate review of a first-person memoir by a person who survived or is living with a challenging psychological condition. These stories offer deeply personal points of view and emphasize to readers that the psychological disorders they are learning about affect real people who live with them every day.

  • Concept Checks at regular intervals throughout the chapter let students verify their comprehension. Answers are at the end of each chapter, along with a more detailed Summary and Key Terms listed in alphabetical order.

  • Visual Summaries (found at the end of each chapter on disorders) are colourful, two-page charts that succinctly summarize the causes, development, symptoms, and treatment of each disorder covered in the chapter. Barlow et al.’s integrative approach is instantly evident in these diagrams, which show the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors in the etiology and treatment of disorders. The visual summaries will help the instructor wrap up discussions, and students will appreciate them as study aids. There is a new visual summary after Chapter 1 that outlines the historical timeline of significant events.
